A Norsk History

Arthur Gunness sent this to us.  It is from Kari Hanna Gunnes, a relative in Norway...

I’m going to tell you a little about Knut Gunnes and his relatives.  My daughter Solvi is translating this for me.

Knut Sivertsen Rye was born in 1837 at Rye in Rennebu. He was married to Haldis Gunnesmael.  They settled down at a little farm named Bogen, hence they used the name Bogen. Around 1880 they moved to Gunnes and changed their names to Gunnes.  Haldis died in 1880.  Knut married Kari Rokkones. This family went to America in 1882 except Ingebrikt who traveled in 1883. Knut’s brother Jakob bought the Gunnes farm in 1882.  Jakob had 6 children and every one of these have several children, hence there are at least 1000 of people descending from Jakob and Kari all over Norway.  Jakob is Gunnar’s great grandfather.

Knut’s first wife was also born in Rennebu and a numerous people are descending from here.

Ingebrikt (born in 1861, Knut’s oldest son) wasn’t allowed to go to America in 1882, but he was supposed to go later. His fiancé Maren traveled to America together with her family in law. This year Ingebrikt got a son with Maren’s sister. The boy’s name was Ola and stayed with his mother and her brother until he got married with Kristine Gunnesmæl. They got 9 children with descendants all over Norway. Maren was born on the neighboring farm here in Rennebu. I think Ola is Svein’s grandfather whom you are in touch with. I don’t know Svein, but I know he has many close relatives here in Rennebu.
